Shockingly, Joe doesn't actually kill somebody for the first time until the third episode of season 4 of You. But throughout, you should know he felt nothing but disgust and resentment.

That hasn't stopped Joe from becoming a media darling or from drawing the attention of law enforcement, though. That's a terrifying cliffhanger.

Joe is both self-aware and vulnerable, and there was sex, murder, and good character development. This resulted in Eat the Rich having the best hour of the season so far.

Joe is such a delightful protagonist because. He believes these things himself, he makes it all too easy to believe him. And, he buys into the fantasies that he would ever be a good guy.

When we share Joe's internal thought process, we tend to get into his reasoning, despite the fact that his behavior indicates otherwise.

Joe thinks he can finally put his problems behind him after moving to London. It makes little difference that his fixation with Marienne and his attempts to prove her wrong form the basis of the entire idea.

It's easy for him to convince himself that he would have continued living his life without relapsing into his old habits if it weren't for this stalker, as long as someone else is doing the killing and maiming and he's the one falling victim to their mechanizations.

His feelings for Kate are a superb illustration of this, as they persist despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Perhaps he thinks his sole preoccupation is with preserving her life, and that his obsession is a direct result of Malcolm's tragic demise.

And we also know that even when Malcolm was still alive, he was unconsciously keeping an eye on her. It was just a matter of time before he started to get obsessed with her, what with Malcolm's infidelity and Kate's evident loneliness that she masks under stoicism.

Joe being Joe, the stalker has only given him an out and a justification for his behavior.

Joe's Narrative

In keeping with the season, the hour heavily draws from cliches and mysteries of yesteryear. So many components from this season's plot—our unreliable narrator in Joe, for example—are reminiscent of literary classics like Holmes and Agatha Christie. I adore how often they make literary references and allusions.

Joe has had to act out his whole ordeal like a whodunit novel. This is not his genre at all, leading to a series of funny blunders.

It's hilarious how the stalker scenario has developed. Whoever it is, they have become an obsession because of how effective they are at teasing him.

This game of cat and mouse is magnificent, but Joe has spent most of it playing catch up. However, his new strategy of being emotionally detached and not feeding the stalker's false sense that they are identical and so understand each other may be fruitful.

Yet another thing that can go wrong for Joe is that the stalker killer is likely to be incredibly perceptive and see right through his ploy.

Season 4, Episode 3 of You is now available for streaming on Netflix.
