The first episode of That ‘90s Show begins 20 years after the end of That 70s Show. Much time is spent introducing the new Teenage characters to the former characters.

Leia (Callie Haverda) and her parents Eric Forman (Topher Grace) and Donna Pinciotti Forman (Laura Prepon) visit Eric’s parents Red and Kitty Forman (Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp) for Independence Day.

Eric has plans for a bonding trip to space camp with Leia for the summer. Over dinner, Red mocks Eric for going to space camp at his age. After Leia leaves the table, Kitty tells Eric that Leia doesn’t seem enthusiastic about the father-daughter space camp experience.

Outdoors Leia plays basketball alone until she hears Gwen Runck (Ashley Aufderheide) singing along with a CD. Leia goes next door to Donna’s childhood home. She meets Gwen and her half-brother Nate (Maxell Acee Donovan).

Around the kitchen table, Red, Kitty, Eric, and Donna play cards, and the camera duplicates the circle from That 70s Show.

The next day, July 4th, Leia wants to visit Gwen and Nate. Eric allows it when Leia promises to return in time for the fireworks. Nate’s best friend, Jay Kelso (Mace Coronel) is there. Nate's girlfriend, Nikki (Sam Morelos) arrives. Ozzie (Reyn Doi), another friend, also shows up.

Incidentally, Jay is the son of Jackie Burkhart Kelso (Mila Kunis) and Kelso (played by Ashton Kutcher in That 70s Show). Kitty mentions later in the episode that Jackie and Kelso have married twice, divorced twice, and are about to marry for the third time.

Nate and Jay reveal that, due to a case of mistaken identity, a prepaid keg of beer is in their van, but they don’t have a tap for the barrel. Since the others have all already been caught trying to buy beer, Leia now has to get the tap.

The group disguises her as a pregnant woman. When that fails, Leia taps her skills from her debate club. She argues that the Teenagers already possess the beer, so if the police find out, everyone will be in trouble, not just the Teens. Leia receives the tap, and the Teens head to the water tower to celebrate.

Leia returns to her grandparent’s house long after the fireworks and her curfew. Nevertheless, she tells Eric and Donna that she wants to stay with her grandparents for the summer. Eric refuses, and he and Leia argue.

Both Eric and Donna talk while sitting on the car's hood in the driveway. Eric admits that he has a problem with the fact that as Leia grows up, she needs him less and less. Later Eric finds Leia in the basement. They talk, and Eric agrees to let her spend the summer with Red and Kitty.

Kitty goes to work preparing snacks for Leia and her friends to enjoy as Red sighs over having another group of Teenagers inhabiting the basement.

With so many new characters to introduce, the first episode relies on comparisons to Teens from That 70s Show.

Leia takes after her father but has a bit more time to develop. Gwen updates Donna’s cool girl next door. Nate resembles Kelso while Nikki appropriately resembles Jackie. Ozzie is modeled on outsider Fez (Wilmer Valderrama) as a gay Asian American who is openly out among his friends but more careful around adults.

For the Teens to carry the show, the characters need more development. That will likely come as the following episodes shift focus to the friends and their relationships.

Episode 1 of That ‘90s Show is now available for streaming on Netflix.
