The spin-off of 'Bridgerton' kicks off in grand style. It features a charming garden meet-cute that sets the stage for a transformative shift in society. At first glance, the initial encounter between Charlotte and her new husband seems delightful and enchanting. However, Charlotte soon discovers, there are many secrets surrounding her new beau. Society has deemed it unfit for her to know.

Despite the impending marriage to the King of England, Charlotte finds no joy in the arrangement. The decision is made by her elder brother, Prince Adolphus, who signs the marriage documents.

As she prepares to enter into this unwanted union, Charlotte meets the Dowager Princess Augusta. She will soon become her mother-in-law upon her arrival in England. To Charlotte's dismay, Princess Augusta's only expectation of her is to bear many children.

Adding to her unease, Charlotte finds herself facing an uncertain future. She receives silence and secrecy from everyone, including her soon-to-be Queen's helper, Brimsley. Brimsley refuses to disclose any information about her future husband.

Upon Charlotte's arrival, the ton is deeply divided along racial lines. Princess Augusta is uneasy about the bride's skin tone. But, because the wedding plans are final, they act like there is no ethnic conflict within the aristocracy. In a surprising move, Princess Augusta invites affluent people of color to attend the wedding and even grants them titles to normalize the situation.

Meanwhile, Agatha Danbury is in a loveless marriage to an elderly man. Although her husband possesses impressive stamina, Agatha finds their sexual encounters deeply unpleasant. Her closest confidante and personal assistant, Coral, dutifully prepare a hot bath for her after each session with her spouse.

In the Bridgerverse's present timeline, Queen Charlotte gets devastating news: her grandchild, Princess Royal, and the infant die during childbirth. Lady Whistledown seizes the opportunity to remind everyone of the monarchy's vulnerability in the absence of an heir. Despite having several children, the King and Queen's offspring have failed to produce legitimate offspring of their own, leaving the throne without a successor.

Under the mounting pressure from both Lady Whistledown and the Prime Minister, Queen Charlotte summons her children to discuss the urgent matter. She implores them to hastily wed and start a family to secure the future of the monarchy. However, the idea fails to ignite any excitement among the reluctant siblings.

We go back in time to an earlier era, where we witness a peculiar incident. As the evening draws to a close, a young King George leads his new bride, Queen Charlotte, to Buckingham House. However, instead of staying with her on their wedding night, he informs her that she must reside there alone while he retires to Kew Palace. The Queen is left wondering why her husband would abandon her on such a special occasion.

When she attempts to confront him, he responds with anger and hostility, leaving her feeling lost and abandoned. The episode concludes with the newlywed Queen lying in her bed, feeling a deep sense of regret for not taking the opportunity to jump over the wall and escape her solitude.

Queen Charlotte is now streaming on Netflix.
