Devil in Ohio episode five opens with a shot of someone digging a grave. The scene takes viewers briefly into the past. The setting is the fall of 1922 at Edenville Settlement of West Virginia.

The man who dug these graves notices a peculiar crow on the shovel and throws a bible on the ground. When the man hears the words "follow me," he appears to be entranced by the foreboding whispers.

The Bible is from the Book of Covenant, which viewers understand later in the episode.

In the meantime, Halloween preparations are underway in the Mathis family. Jules is alone since Mae has been away with Victoria, the popular schoolgirl. In Suzanne's case, the washing machine contains a white nightgown from when Mae left with the flower in the midst of the night.

When Dani cries out for assistance or tries to contact her mother, Suzanne ignores her and instead speaks with Jules, who reveals what happened with Mae regarding the flower a few weeks ago. In defense of Mae, Suzanne asserts that she "can't help it" and that it is related to the symbols Hawkins revealed to Suzanne in the previous episode.

Mae visits the shrine and makes a wish while praying and lighting a candle. However, when Suzanne shows up, Mae says she would like to remain at the house. She also shares a legend story about Caleb, who has been seduced by a crow who claims that Lucifer's light illuminates the way out of the darkness.
