The Mother (2023) on Netflix — Movie Review
- May 20, 2023
The action-drama, "The Mother" tells the story of a military veteran who stops at nothing to protect her daughter from harm. Even if that means giving her up and running away.
Jennifer Lopez, Joseph Fiennes, Omari Hardwick, Gael Garcia, Lucy Pez, and Paul Raci star in "The Mother.” It is under the direction of Niki Caro and had a screenplay by Misha Green, Andrea Berloff, and Peter Craig. Due to the film's generic story and unimpressive characters, you could watch "The Mother" in the background while you were working on something else and not miss a thing.
The opening scene of "The Mother" shows our FBI informant (Lopez) and her FBI handler Cruise (Omari). They are under brutal attack in an FBI Safehouse. The informant, who will soon become The Mother, barely escaped the attack while Cruise suffers a critical injury. The Informant and Cruise go to the hospital where The Informant gives birth to a baby girl. This leaves her with only two options: become the mother and flee with the child in constant danger, or vanish and leave the child with someone else knowing she won't be the mother of the child any longer. The Informant decided to vanish so that her daughter could live a normal life.
She chooses to stay in a cabin on a remote Alaskan lake after leaving her child. However, she never lets go of her emotional attachment to her and continues to watch her daughter from a distance. Following Zoe's 12th birthday, the mother and friend Jon (Paul Raci) receive a message stating that Zoe is in danger.
A series of events occur, placing them in situations where their lives are in danger while trying to save Zoe. The mother is committed to killing anyone who stands in her way. Even if she is up against two extremely dangerous weapon dealers. There is hand-to-hand combat, a gunfight, a chase scene, and a stealth scene. The film's action seamlessly transitions from scene to scene. In order to convey the serious tone of the movie and to reflect the personalities of the characters, the action never holds back from showing brutal fight scenes between characters.
After the movie's climax, there is a period where the mother and daughter, Zoe, must temporarily live together in order to survive. This section of the movie removes the action and focuses on the drama. We can see how difficult it is for the mother to relate to her daughter. They soon bond and embrace one another, especially after Zoe learns about her mother's past.
In order to highlight the gravity of the situation, the movie successfully captures the gloomy monotone atmosphere of the movie. The action scenes were entertaining to watch, and the drama was endearing and effective at creating an emotional bond between the characters. In general, The Mother is a fun watch if you're bored and have nothing to do or just looking to pass the time. It delivers an action-drama that is not bad but weren't great either. Jennifer Lopez playing The Mother is the highlight of the film.
