"About My Father" is a family comedy. It stars Sebastian Maniscalco, who co-wrote it. It's semi-autobiographical and episodic. Laura Terruso's direction is uneven. The film feels randomly stitched together.

It's based on Maniscalco's bond with his Sicilian immigrant father, Salvo. Sebastian, the lead, is a hotel manager in Chicago. He's set to propose to his artist girlfriend, Ellie Collins (Leslie Bibb). They're spending the Fourth of July at Ellie's wealthy family's home in Virginia. Sebastian can't abandon his grumpy father Salvo (Robert De Niro) though.

Maniscalco, known for stand-up comedy, is transitioning into film. His films often showcase his Italian American family background.

Sebastian decides to bring Salvo along. He worries his frugal, traditional dad will embarrass him. Especially in front of his sophisticated in-laws-to-be. Salvo is keen to meet the Collins family. Particularly before giving Sebastian a family heirloom for Ellie.

De Niro’s appearance reminds us of "Meet the Parents 4". Only this time, parents impress each other. Culture clash ensues as Salvo attends events at the Collins' estate. Ellie’s parents are wealthy hotel owner Bill (David Rasche) and Senator Tigger (Kim Cattrall). Ellie’s privileged brothers, Lucky (Anders Holm) and Doug (Brett Dier), are also present.

The script struggles to make things feel real. It uses clunky, far-fetched plot devices to move the story along. De Niro as Salvo is engaging, yet familiar. Maniscalco has a pleasant presence, but his character lacks depth.

Honest, warm comedies about parent-child dynamics are always welcome. That makes the missed opportunity of "About My Father" even sadder. With better guidance, Maniscalco could deliver superior observational comedy.
