Recap — 'Troll' on Netflix

tv

- Dec 18, 2022

The plot centers on a gang of outcasts who come together to try to stop a terrifying beast from wreaking devastation across the nation. An explosion deep in the Dovre mountains shakes the region, unleashing a massive beast that terrorizes the residents and terrorizes the agricultural environment.

This monstrosity sets its sights on Oslo and begins a deliberate march there, destroying everything in its route. It's up to Paleobiology specialist Nora Tidemann, Prime Minister's advisor Andreas Isaksen, and Army Captain Kris to try and find a solution before it's too late to avert certain destruction.

Tobias, Nora's father, who is the local expert in folklore and Trolls, further complicates matters. The only issue is that Nora and her insane father are alienated from one another, which could cause problems. However, can they put aside their disagreements in order to tackle Norway's enormous problem?

The plot itself is fairly simple, but once the creature appears around the halfway point, the drama and mystery largely vanish, to be replaced by a good old-fashioned action movie. Of course, there's nothing wrong with that, and the film's tone and presentation in many ways remind one of the Godzilla movie from the 1990s.

Troll has a difficulty because of its dubious logic and reused plot. There are some scenes in this that I've already described that were directly lifted from other monster movies. Godzilla references can be found in the discovery of a giant footprint, the vibrations that cause the water to move in Jurassic Park, and the giant creature fending off helicopters in King Kong. You'll find yourself crossing off all the movies this riffs on over the course of the 90-minute film as these sequences continue.
