Tully begins her documentary in 2004 as the film's first scene. The special documentary is being made by Kate. Tully is surprised when Cloud, his mother, shows up and agrees to be interviewed.

Kate thinks it's inappropriate for them to discuss Tully's father in front of the camera at their first meeting. Tully nevertheless continues the interview. Tully learns from Cloud that she thought her daughter would despise her father if she told her the truth about him. She tells how they met, how she fell in love with him, how they began dating, how she became pregnant, and how terrible his family was. She also acknowledges that she loved him. She admits that although she went to the family home, he had left before she gave birth.

Tully finally realizes that her father was a Binswanger and that Benedict was the one who kept repaying Cloud. A huge insight. In order to finally locate Tully's father, Kate explains to Tully that they must identify Binswanger's brother. They learn that Parker Baldwin, now known as Benedict's brother, is Parker Binswanger, who is also Tully's biological father.

In the 1980s, Kate and Johnny fight to control their highs after mistakenly taking ecstasy at work. They express their love for one another, Kate says they don't need to get married, and Johnny then asks her to move in with him.

Tully and Kate are organizing a triple date with Brad and Eugene in 1975. Although Tully is anxious about it, she is prepared to attend in order to support her friend Eugene. Tully hooks up with Brad despite her anxiety before the night even began, but she remembers the time she was sexually assaulted and turns around.
