The second episode begins with a young Cloud acting upset as she slams on a door while holding Tully and informs the residents that "Tully exists."

Tully informs Kate in 2003 that she and Max have divorced.

Now that Johnny has been discharged from the hospital, Kate must adjust to her new situation in which Johnny and Charlie are dating while she watches as the ex-wife. In private, Charlie tells Kate that she appreciates that she's given Johnny a place to stay while he heals. The two women seem to be at odds with one another. Later, while Johnny is experiencing terrifying nightmares related to his time in Iraq, Kate tries to support him. Johnny dismisses his ordeal as "just a nightmare."

Kate is ecstatic to accompany Johnny on a spa retreat in the 1980s. While they are traveling, Johnny appears disinterested. Finally, Kate questions Johnny about it. Johnny wishes he had never learned the truth about Tully's sex life from her, and he asks Kate why she didn't reveal to him that she was a virgin when they first started dating.

Johnny informs Kate that he does not want to "f**k things up" as she becomes enraged rapidly. As it pours down, Johnny confides in Kate that he is afraid because he loves her "too much." They recreate the kiss from The Notebook by doing it in the rain.

In a subsequent flashback, young Kate and Tully are getting ready to travel together to look for Tully's father. They successfully catch a ride with some hippies. Tully decides after spending some time with them to leave them and take a ride with some sketchy nuns who smoke and carry a gun. They continue their hike with Ross Lake after that.
