Tully and Kate write letters in 1975's Episode 1. Letter-writing friends. They're happy to share lives. After clashing with Tully outside the church, Kate is at her father's Wake in 2004. Kate won't discuss Tully's "accident."

Episode 1 goes back a year. Kate's husband was killed in Iraq, so Tully buys her ice cream to comfort her. While shopping, a lawyer "serves" her. Wilson King sues her for contract breach.

Tully, Kate, and Johnny cover a demonstration in 1985. Kate and Johnny are dating, but she tells Tully they're not in a "confirmed relationship" Tully is annoyed she can't spend time with Kate because she's dating Johnny. Danny then wants cocktails with Tully.
After covering protests, Tully bails out her mother, Cloud. She hosts her. Tully calls Kate about her mother, but she's too distracted by Johnny.

Kate and Tully visit Johnny in 2003 to confirm he's alive. The guard says "immediate family only" Kate regrets her divorce from Johnny, but Tully reassures her. Kate can't see Johnny, so Tully attempts to distract her. A nurse recognizes Tully and lets them through.

Kate sees Johnny and is shocked by his condition. While he's unconscious, she calls herself an idiot and says she still loves him. She's starting over.

Tully cares for her mother in 1985. When she returns to the hotel, her mother rinsed the mini bar and wrote "you can afford it." Young Tully attends a party in a flashback. She gets drunk and home. Her grandma slaps her for being drunk and rude. Tully is "just like her mother," she says.
