PlayStation 5 Pro Release Speculation

The PlayStation 5 has been our for about a year now and shows no signs of slowing down in sales and popularity. It still remains a hard-to-find gaming system and we can only imagine it will get even tougher heading into the holiday shopping season. So, start shopping early!  While the PS5 keeps on truckin, it’s never to early to start thinking about what Sony might have in mind for a next-generation of its flagship gaming platform. This is where rumors of the PS5 Pro come in.

What is the PS5 Pro?

Technically, it doesn’t exist, so it’s nothing at this point. But, let’s engage in some fun speculation, just for the sake of dreaming about a new gaming platform. A PS5 Pro would be the next generation for the PS5.  So, let’s not get too hung up on the name, even though it follows Sony’s naming convention process (there is a PS4 Pro).  We know that Sony will come out with an updated version of the PS5 eventually, so eventually, a PS5 Pro or other named device will be coming out.

What Upgrades Might it include?

Rumors have been very scarce on what a theoretical PS5 Pro might Let’s put our wishlist together:

8K gameplay support

We know this is on the horizon, so it makes sense that the next-generation PS5 would have it. 4K has been more than sufficient, so 8K isn’t exactly gaining a ton of momentum right now, but still, it’s the nature of progress. But, if it’s not 8K, we can expect more powerful support and full usage of 4K.

An upgraded processor

Like the 6nm Zen 3 or Zen 4 from AMD.

PlayStation 5 Pro Release Speculation

VR

This seems like a sure bet. And we might see something here before a full-fledged PS5 Pro comes along.  Maybe as soon as 2022. Sony has already previewed some new hardware with VR capabilities, so a PSVR 2 or something along those lines could be coming in the not too distant future.

A “Slim” version

Maybe Sony follows the lead of Microsoft with its Xbox Series S and delivered a slimmed-down version of the PS5 for more price-conscious consumers and newer game players who don’t want to step up to the cash register for the more expensive PS5.

When Could We See it?

No time soon, that’s for sure. But, it might make sense to look out toward 2023 or 2024 as a logical time for a new gaming system release. This is based on the timing between the PS4 and PS4 Pro releases, which was basically three years.

What Will it Cost?

It’s very hard to say since we don’t have enough info about the tech upgrades and enhancements we might see in a PS5 Pro. But, there tends to be around a $100 price increase for new models, so $600 seems like a reasonable place to start.

We’ll be back with more on the PS5 Pro, once rumors get a little more solidified.
