iPhone 13 - What we Know and Expect

Apple will be officially unveiling its next slate of devices during its virtual event on September 14 and the next-generation iPhone (13) will be included in the announcement.  So, what do we know or expect to see from the next iPhone? (You can also check out our past article on some early rumors and expectations.)

Official Name

The rumors are it will follow the normal naming convention and go with the iPhone 13, despite any superstitions about it being an unlucky number.  But, we’ll know for sure on September 14.  So, we’ll just keep calling it the iPhone 13 for now.

Models

Rumors and available info suggest we can expect to see 4 models of the iPhone 13, similar to the iPhone 12. There will be a standard iPhone 13, a Mini, a Pro, and a Pro Max.

Phone Size

The new iPhone is likely to be a hair thicker than the iPhone 12, but the difference probably won’t be noticeable.

Pricing

Analysts suggest the pricing should be similar to the iPhone 12, which starts at $799 and goes up from there. But don’t be surprised if the standard new iPhone comes in a bit lower, to better compete with Samsung and Google competitors.

Camera Upgrades

iPhone 13 - What we Know and Expect

An upgraded camera has become pretty much expected in each new iPhone release, and the iPhone 13 should be no different. Look out for an improved wide-angle lens, better night photography, and Lidar technology on all camera models.

ID Options

Recent iPhones went away from Touch ID in favor of facial recognition, but as we have all learned during times when we have worn a facemask since 2020, that sort of login isn’t as straightforward when wearing a mask. So, the iPhone 13 is expected to bring back an enhanced version of Touch ID as a part of the overall screen (rather than bringing back a separate button).

Ports

It is likely that the headphone jack is gone for good, so don’t expect it to return in the new iPhone. How about a Lightning port? With the likely change to MagSafe charging, the Lighting port might go the way of the headphone jack, but rumors suggest it may stick around for a while longer.

Battery

Rumors suggest that the new iPhone will have a larger battery than its predecessor, providing more battery life.  However, remember that battery life and size/capacity don’t always go hand in hand.

iOS 15

The iPhone 13 will come with the latest, upcoming iOS release, including a variety of new features.
