Well, for starters, our men’s defending champion, Novak Djokovic, has been deported from the country. Pretty rare event in this history of most likely any sport, but that’s a bet that professional athletes take sometimes when playing in other countries. And most especially difficult when there’s a pandemic.

Djokovic has been outspoken about not getting the vaccine and the Australian immigration police didn’t let him in the country at first when he landed in Melbourne. After appealing the decision, he was allowed to quarantine at his hotel. But immigration reinstated the penalty once again. And now he’s been deported.

Honestly, it’s going to leave the field pretty wide open for Nadal, who is the most likely biggest favorite in the field. Nadal just won his first round match against Marcos Giron in straight, easy sets (6-1, 6-4, 6-2). His second r

Madison Keys

American, Madison Keys, got the first upset with her first round defeat over Sofia Kenin, previous Australian Open champ from 2020. Keys is sitting at No. 51 in the rankings, so we’re excited to see her carry the American flag through hopefully more rounds in the tournament.

Defending champ Naomi Osaka also won her first round match to set up a second round clash with another American, Madison Bengle.
