It’s the start of the 2nd week of the 2022 Australian Open down under. Here’s where we stand so far on the men’s and women’s sides.
Men’s Singles
We already have two quarterfinal matches ready with Gael Monfils and Rafael Nadal being the biggest names. Monfils, 17th seed, has a match up against 7th seed and Italian, Matteo Berrettini. Monfils won his 4th round match against Kecmanovic in straight sets, as did Berrettini against Carreno Busta.
Nadal won his fourth round match against Adrian Mannarino in straight sets. The first had a lengthy tiebreaker that went to 16-14, but the last two sets he won both at 6-2. He will square off against Denis Shapovalov, the 14th seed. Shapovalov also had an easy win, and the upset, against 3rd seed Alexander Zverev.
In the bottom half of the men’s draw, we will most likely see 2nd seed Dannil Medvedev advance and face either veteran 29th seed Marin Cilic or 9th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Women’s Singles
On the ladies’ side, we also already have two quarterfinal matches ready. Number 1 seed and hometown hero, Ashleigh Barty, is set to face American and 21st seed, Jessica Pegula. It will be an interesting match up as Barty is riding a really strong wave, not having dropped a set so far against any opponent.
Pegula has had a similarly easy route to the quarterfinals, only dropped one set in the first round. And she also had the upset in her last win, taking out 5th seed Maria Sakkari.
The US also has another female in the quarterfinals. Madison Keys took out the 8th seed two days ago in a really easy win and will face 4th seed Barbora Krejcikova.
We could potentially have another American in the bottom half of the draw–Danielle Collins. Most likely coming in against Simona Halep.
