The day takes a nerve-wracking turn when Olivia points out that Erin has an important interview lined up to secure her teaching position permanently-critical for ensuring her child Harper stays enrolled in the school. Determined yet anxious, Erin gears up for this pivotal moment.
But life throws her a curveball. Emilio asks Erin for an unusual favor: to plant a bug on the computer of Benecio Agustin, a lawyer entangled in criminal activities. Erin manages to complete the task but not without drama. As she's about to leave, Benecio arrives unexpectedly. Spotted by a housemaid who screams, Erin has no option but to flee, ending up at gunpoint before making a daring escape into the ocean.
Erin's ordeal makes her late for her job interview and leaves her inappropriately dressed. Despite an initial moment of panic, she salvages the situation by offering an emotional reason for her desire to secure a permanent role at the school. She recalls her own tumultuous childhood, emphasizing her wish to be a guiding light for troubled students like Dylan.
Penelope, a member of the school board, appears to be moved by Erin's plea. Meanwhile, Harper, Erin's daughter, grapples with her own mysterious issues, including disturbing drawings that link back to Erin's shadowy past.
Despite Erin's heartfelt interview, she learns she didn't secure the permanent position. Initially, she suspects Penelope of sabotage but later finds out that her own lack of preparation cost her the job. Around the same time, she engages with Daniel Lang, Dylan's father and a school trustee. He offers to examine Dylan's issues and suggests that he can advocate for Erin, which she declines.
However, the action isn't over. Erin discovers Emilio's residence is broken into. Tracing his phone, she finds him being tortured by Benecio. A life-threatening rescue ensues, and we learn Emilio's involvement with Benecio involves gambling debts and blackmail-putting Erin and her family in jeopardy.
Back home, while Olivia babysits Harper, a startling revelation occurs: Harper hints that her mom owns a gun. Olivia later discovers a toy gun in the same bag where Erin had previously stored a real one.
The episode concludes with a mysterious glimpse into a British prison where a blonde woman is seen holding a photograph of Erin, Harper, and herself, fueling further intrigue.
Despite its action-packed sequences, the episode flirts with the risk of falling into a "girl boss" narrative that could undermine its complexity. Supporting characters like Penelope and Olivia also deserve more depth if the series aims to fully resonate. However, episode 2 holds its own, showing promise without resting on its laurels. It leaves the viewer eagerly awaiting how Erin's dual life will continue to unravel.
Who is Erin Carter? is now streaming on Netflix.
