What’s New in the Star Wars Universe in 2022?

Disney Plus is really sitting on a gold mine of content in 2022 and beyond, with two immensely popular content universes at their disposal - the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Star Wars Universe. Both have a number of exciting releases on the slate for 2022, but let’s take a specific look at Star Wars and what fans can expect this year.

The Book of Boba Fett

This was the first Star Wars show release in 2022, already released (actually premiering in December 2021) and delivering new episodes through February 9, 2022. The series follows the adventures of bounty hunter, Boba Fett, following the events of Return of the Jedi (Star Wars VI), from way back in 1983. The show also follows storylines from Disney’s hit series, The Mandalorian and focuses on Boba Fett’s attempts to take over the criminal territory once controlled by Jabba the Hutt. It stars Temeura Morrison as Fett, Ming-Na Wen as mercenary and assassin, Fennec Shand, and Pedro Pascal as The Mandalorian. It also features cameos and appearances of Mark Hamill (obviously as Luke Skywalker), Timothy Olyphant, Rosario Dawson, Danny Trejo, Stephen Root, Jennifer Beals, and Amy Sedaris, among others.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

This has to be the most highly anticipated Star Wars show to date. Fans will see Ewan McGregor reprise his role as Obi-Wan and Hayden Christensen return as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. The action picks up with Obi-Wan in exile on Tatooine following the slaughter of the entire Jedi order by Vader. Will we see a young Luke Skywalker? How about a return of Jabba the Hutt? Basically, any character we met in the original trilogy is fair game to show up in a younger version.  No date has been officially announced, but rumors suggest May 4th (May the 4th be with you) is a logical date to keep an eye on.

Andor

What’s New in the Star Wars Universe in 2022?

Star Wars fans will certainly remember the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, that was set just before the original trilogy. This show features a return of rebel spy, Cassian Andor, from Rogue One. Since Andor died at the end of Rogue One, we can assume this will tell an earlier part of his story supporting the rebel alliance. Once again, no date has been announced, but this show has been inproduction for some time, it is likely to be the next release after Boba Fett.

The Mandalorian - Season 3

After a 2-year break, The Mandalorian will make its triumphant return in 2022! We should expect this one toward the end of the year. So many questions linger as we head into season 3. Will we continue to have Luke Skywalker as a recurring character? What happens to Grogu without The Mandalorian to look after him? What about our favorite bounty hunter? How is he handling giving up his adopted ‘child’ Grogu? This one will be eagerly anticipated until it’s release.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch - Season 2

The only currently running animated Star Wars series will return sometime in 2022 with its second season. Following the events of previous Star Wars animated series, The Clone Wars, we will continue to follow the adventures of a rogue squad of clonetroopers who refused to follow Imperial orders and went rogue. What’s next for Clone Force 99?  We’ll have to wait and see.
