Since its inception, Netflix has kept a tight lid on data related to how many people watch various movies or shows on the streaming service. Yes, you could always see a list of Popular movies or shows in your Netflix account, but only Netflix insiders actually know the real numbers behind those lists. Until now.
Netflix just launched a website where it provides information on its most popular movies and shows.
What does it track?
The main category lets you look at the top 10 global movies or shows in either English or another language (non-English) by an adjustable weekly date range.
The site then shows how the titles from the Global Top 10 and how they rank in different countries.
Next, you can take a quick look at the Most Popular Films or TV shows based on the number of hours viewed in the first 28 days after their release. This looks to be an all-time top 10 list, so the movies aren’t all brand new. However, it is going to be skewed toward releases in the past few years, simply because the Netflix subscriber base keeps growing, giving new blockbusters a better chance to rack up those initial view totals in their first 28 days.
The website may have just launched, but it is backfilled with data beginning on June 28, 2021.
Why should you care?
This is a fair question. This kind of data is definitely interesting to anyone who writes about the movie and TV industry, but what about the typical Netflix viewer?
While we all like to discover new content on our own, it never hurts to see what a massive number of people are watching on Netflix. Maybe you just want to shake your head and wonder why so many people are watching a show you think is a waste of time.
