TV

With all the attention paid to many of the latest shows or movies out on streaming services right now, like WandaVision or Wonder Woman 1984, it’s easy to overlook a bunch of great under the radar content that may not get as much attention.  So, check out this list of fun shows and movies to catch on some premium streaming services, while you wait for the next MCU release.

Netflix – Disenchantment

Netflix
Netflix

If you’re a fan of The Simpsons and Futurama, you might just enjoy this foray into fairy-tales and a magical, medieval setting. The animated series from Simpsons and Futurama creator Matt Groening introduces viewers to a very improper princess Bean, her demon cat familiar Luci, a strange elf companion Elfo and a wide set of adventures in the kingdom of Dreamland. You can binge all three seasons on Netflix.

Amazon Prime – Sneaky Pete

If you’re a fan of con man and heist thrillers, with a dark comedic twist, then Sneaky Pete might be right up your alley. Through three seasons (as of 2019) you can watch criminal and con man, Marius Josipovic, use the identity of an old cellmate Pete to help him escape his past and a gangster who wants payback. Giovanni Ribisi plays Marius/Pete as he tries to maintain his cover with Pete’s estranged family while executing one or two cons along the way. It’s a great mix of caper and con as the main character is faced with various instances where he puts his own self-interest against a slightly oddball family that he clearly comes to appreciate.

Hulu – Castle Rock

If you’re a real Stephen King fan, then you’ll enjoy this series, if for no other reason than the little easter eggs pointing to various King stories. The two seasons are entirely different, with a different set of characters (similar to the Fargo TV series) and different storylines. But, they share a similar place in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine. You’ll enjoy seeing a younger version of classic King villain Annie Wilkes (Misery) and Tim Robbins as the patriarch of a crime family in the same vicinity as Shawshank Prison (for fans of The Shawshank Redemption), among others. Both seasons are fun for different reasons, but both are worth watching.

HBO Max – The Flight Attendant

This one did get a little attention when it came out recently, but maybe not as much as you might expect. The story focuses on Cassie, an alcoholic flight attendant largely making her way through a life with few attachments other than to partying in every city she visits. Her slow self-destructive spiral suddenly speeds up when she wakes up next to a dead man, a passenger on her most recent flight who she hooked up with for a night on the town. She can’t remember what happened and doesn’t know if she killed him or exactly what happened. The show then follows Cassie, played by The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco, as she tries to both unravel what happened and who is behind the murder while staying ahead of the FBI and their own investigation. It’s an odd mix of black comedy, murder mystery, and deeply personal drama that makes it stand out from the typical streaming series.
