We begin with a flashback to the conclusion of season two, when Sissy and Harlan were leaving in their car. They flee and settle in a new place, and Sissy appears to be content with another lady. They decide to leave town after Harlan mistakenly uses his supernatural abilities to kill his beloved rabbit. When Harlan is bullied at his new school, his powers once more flare off, hitting the youngsters in his immediate vicinity. Sissy had to frequently relocate Harlan from town to town as he was growing up and continues to have issues with controlling his powers. On October 1, 1989, she eventually passes away in the hospital. Inconsolable Harlan sits at her bedside, his heart bursting with energy as his abilities go berserk.
Back in the present, when Sloane sees what occurred to Jayme and Alphonso, she bolts from the floor of the Hotel Obsidian. Sloane flees, and when Luther tracks her down, she strikes him because she believes he set her up. Allison and Diego step in to help. They discover that the Sparrows did not have the briefcase after all when Allison uses her skills on Sloane to make her reveal its location. It has just been three days since Viktor last saw Harlan (in Viktor’s timeframe), therefore it makes sense that when Viktor follows him, and Harlan notes that he has not aged at all. He says that ever since Viktor helped him at the lake, he can hear those with special abilities. Like a tuning fork, perhaps.
Sloane accuses Luther of inadvertently exploiting her to obtain information and he is able to persuade her otherwise. Sloane attends a meeting in the lobby with Luther, Diego, Allison, and Viktor where they discuss what to do with Sloane and Harlan. Finally, they consent to send Sloane back to the Sparrow Academy, but Ben asks that they turn over Harlan as well.
