The story is divided into two parts, with Klaus and Luther relaxing in the afterlife in one and the Guardians being fought by the last of civilization in Hotel Oblivion in the other. Klaus and Luther talk about dying and their tedious plans for eternity in the Void. Even still, Luther is still in survival mode and is pleading with Klaus to warn the others by returning to reality. Content to be dead and gone, Klaus is done with life and requires some convincing. By using force against "The King of Death," Luther is able to convince him to go back to the world of the living.
The remaining members of the group are at Hotel Oblivion, another gloomy accommodation. A savage creature must be avoided, there are some clever symbols to find, and there are some significant trust concerns swirling around. Reginald thinks that locating a sigil-a grouping of symbols-will hold the secret to resetting the universe. The heroes divide into smaller squads as they begin looking for these arcane symbols. Just as Reginald is about to call the ones guarding this doorway to the altar, Klaus emerges from the grave. This monocle-wearing villain, who is full of his own secrets, views everything as a game.
Five, who forms one of the sub-teams, and Viktor get some much-needed alone time to work through these trust concerns. Five believes Allison and Reginald struck a dishonorable pact, and he also believes they were somehow involved in the killings of Luther and Klaus. As is customary for her, Allison storms off. Five accidentally becomes isolated from the others in this maze-like realm when Viktor gives chase. Once again, Viktor and Allison are at odds with one another. The Guardian then charges at them while brandishing an ax, easily slicing through Allison's skin.
