As a long time Wii owner, clocking in at over a decade of gaming, I feel pretty confident in game recommendations. Maybe that is because I have beaten every game around three times from start to finish or maybe it’s because I’m clinging onto cherished childhood memories.
Either way, the Wii is a classic gaming device that many grew up with. While it has evolved into newer versions such as the Wii U and Wii Switch, nothing beats the original with its one-of-a-kind games.
Below are some of my personal favorite Wii games that will bring back memories for most.
Guitar Hero
If you are anywhere from 20 to 30-years old, you are lying if some of the classic rock songs in your playlist did not come from Guitar Hero. We all played it, became obsessed with it and challenged our siblings to rock-offs. With seven versions of the game, the franchise took over North America and the 21st century. It introduced the young people to artists and bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slipknot and Pat Benatar. Guitar Hero was truly a cultural reset.
Lego Franchise Games
Suddenly the characters of all your favorite superhero movies turned into those things you used to play with when you were a kid. What were they called? Oh, yeah! Legos! From Lego Star Wars to Indiana Jones, you can tackle their biggest missions (as seen from the movies) through your Wii controller. These games even spawned movies such as The LEGO Batman movie featuring Will Arnett and Zach Galifianakis. Bet you have never seen the Ark of the Covenant in lego form, now you can!
New Super Mario Bros
The Mario franchise does not need much of an introduction. With its long reign of video games starting in 1985 to their most recent release in 2021, Mario and Luigi stay prominent in many generations. A personal favorite, New Super Mario Bros, takes players through a series of levels where they must journey past enemies such as King Boo, Cheep-Cheep and their biggest nemesis — Bowser. This game can be played with multiple players. With
Mario Kart
This is another Mario fan favorite that brings out the best and worst in players. The optimal way to play it is in multiplayer mode, with several Wii controllers and a lot of competitive energy in the room. The variety of characters and race tracks to choose from makes it much more fun and overtime of playing it you might catch yourself assuming the traits of your Kart character in real life. My go-to character is Yoshi and I dress up like him for every costume event. Whether you are at a family gathering or party, this game is sure to bring people together.
Ratatouille
Many might not know about this game but the only reason I do is because it is my most cherished Wii game. Just like the movie, the game is set around Remy the rat and his passion for cooking behind the guise of Linguini. In this game, Remy scurries all through the sewers and restaurant pipes just to get to the kitchen where he whips up his famous ‘Ratatouille’ dish. This game is very fun and kid-friendly.
