The Witcher Season 2 Primer

One solid fantasy series hit for Netflix in late 2019 was The Witcher, an adaptation of the novel series by Andrzej’s Sapkowski. Netflix announced a second season fairly soon afterward and the first feature trailer was unveiled at WitcherCon in July 2021.

If you watched season 1 and wonder what’s up next for Geralt of Rivia and the other characters, check out our early primer below.

When is it coming out?

The Witcher Season 2 will be released on December 17, 2021. Following the normal Netflix release model, the entire season will be available to stream all at once on the release date.

What is The Witcher about?

Season 1 introduced us to the main character, Geralt of Rivia as the titular Witcher. Witchers are warriors who have been trained from a young age to fight monsters. They develop various supernatural abilities through their training to aid them in their battles. Geralt is played by Henry Vavill (aka Superman) and in the first season he ends up on a quest to find and protect the heir to throne of Cintra - a young girl named Ciri.

We also meet Ciri as she escapes the murder of her royal family and the loss of her kingdom. She takes refuge in the wilderness, finding help from various people along the way.

A third major character is also introduced in Yennefer of Vengerberg, who we meet as a girl living in poverty but who seems to have a spark of magic. She is bought from her family by a sorceress who takes her to a school where she may learn to become a powerful wizard - which she does by the end of season 1.

Season 2 will pick up after Geralt found Ciri and will take her to a Witcher stronghold to keep her safe. However, from the trailer, we know things won’t go entirely as planned.

We also have the episode titles for 7 of the 8 episodes.

  • A Grain of Truth
  • Kaer Morhen
  • What is Lost
  • Redanian Intelligence
  • Turn Your Back
  • Dear Friend
  • Voleth Meir
  • And one to be announced (the season finale)

How Time Works in the Episodes

One quick note for viewers new to The Witcher. In season 1, among the most challenging and confusing aspects initially was the fact that the story is not told in a linear fashion. We also don’t get helpfu dates or years to help differentiate when a story takes place. So, much of the first season is told out of chronological order. We can assume this may continue in season 2, but we won’t know until December 17.
