Late in “Ne Zha 2,” the highly successful sequel to the 2019 Chinese animated action film, viewers are plunged into an awe-inspiring spectacle. The clash between divine immortals and hideous beasts in an ancient mythic realm explodes into an overwhelming display of characters and bombastic effects. This aerial showdown becomes so vast, individual fighters are reduced to mere specks, like birds in a flock.

For this second installment, writer-director Jiaozi, or Yu Yang, resumes the story of Ne Zha, the unlikely hero who turned his destiny of becoming a villain, into a tale of friendship and opposition against the immense forces that created them. Ne Zha and Ao Bing, two halves of a whole elemental energy, demonstrate a captivating yin and yang dynamic throughout the series.
At the end of the first film, both adversaries sacrifice their physical forms to safeguard their clans. In “Ne Zha 2,” Ao Bing’s spirit guides Ne Zha's mission to recover his tangible body, maneuvering through obstacles and acquiring a life-saving elixir.
The intricate design underpinning this universe is noteworthy as each character's distinct personalities are viscerally communicated. Ne Zha, plucky and full of fire, transforms from a cartoonish boy into a lean, mature teenager with an aloof attitude. Meanwhile, the dragons' transformation into humans showcases the deliberate craft of the animators.

Derived from a 16th-century text, “Investiture of the Gods,” the films feature a plethora of deities and legends, which may require attentive viewership.
Despite its complexities, the film's heart lies in Ne Zha's deep bond with his parents, particularly his mother. The film astutely suggests that appearances can often be deceiving, with seemingly monstrous characters like Ne Zha possessing a more laudable moral compass. However, it's the pulsating visual spectacle and immersive storytelling that makes “Ne Zha 2” a unique viewing experience, proving how it holds nothing back in its pursuit of animated excellence.
