The Secret Art of Human Flight (2024) — Movie Review

"The Secret Art of Human Flight" is not a tale about learning to fly, but a story about experiencing and overcoming grief. Ben, the protagonist played by Grant Rosenmeyer, is in mourning after the sudden loss of his artistic collaborator and wife, Sarah. Consequently, he forgets to tend to his essential needs and ends up living on his front lawn for several days straight, demonstrating a distressing level of apathy towards his living conditions.

In search of something more than his current despair, Ben turns to an enigmatic figure known as Mealworm, who promises to teach him the secret art of human flight. But despite the growing concern from his sister Gloria surrounding Ben's unusual mentor, Ben becomes entangled in the stranger's peculiar training program and teachings.

Through the documenting of old videos and flashbacks, the film beautifully portrays Ben’s happy times with Sarah and the creative process they shared. Their relationship wasn't without its struggles, which makes their bond more believable and engaging. These glimpses into their shared life enrich the plot and create a poignant narrative laden with emotion.

Jesse Orenshein's inventive script brings a touch of quirky whimsy to the inherently sorrowful storyline, as it forces the viewers to follow Ben on an unusually enlightening adventure. In a race against his grief-stricken reality, Ben adheres to Mealworm’s bizarre coaching, displaying his eagerness to find comfort in a senseless world.

Despite some minor shortcomings in editing and modest production values, the film shines with heartfelt sincerity, portraying the complicated factors involved in the grieving process. Whether it's the emotional lows, cathartic breakthroughs, or periods of feeling numb, Mendoza and Orenshein present a striking portrait of grief, which is further accentuated by Rosenmeyer’s authentic performance.

"The Secret Art of Human Flight" ultimately becomes a resonating and thought-provoking tale about personal loss, strange journeys, and the powerful act of grieving. And although Ben’s loss may be a singular experience, he is not alone in his journey to recovery - we, as a part of the audience, join him on this flight toward solace.
