The Dropout episode 3 begins in 2007 when Sunny is issued a vicious inspection at the airport. Ahead of that time, only iPhones were released. Elizabeth Holmes was granted the opportunity to meet the woman who designed them, Ana Arriola.
Ana convinces Elizabeth to discard investments from Apple in favor of Theranos, indicating others like them should stay together.
Elizabeth’s Mom
Elizabeth’s mom, Noel, learns something about Richard while jogging with Lorraine. Lorraine discloses the information that she knew that Richard is researching the work of Theranos in order to file a patent that could compete with it.
Elizabeth informs Noel that Richard is attempting to sabotage her small business. She did this out of petty resentment, otherwise she would not have asked for his help. Noel regards Richard’s claims as dubious. But Elizabeth later finds out that he already holds a patent on a home blood testing device.
Elizabeth Keeps The Prototype From Ana
Elizabeth now detracts from showing the prototype to Ana and the Theranos board. She displays the failed prototype to Ana along with the Theranos board. Avie Tevanian (One of the board members) is dubious about the Novartis contract not coming through for the company.
Thoughts
That gripping finale creates an excellent symmetry to the first three episodes while firmly establishing Naveen Andrews’s place in the series. It’s a defining point in the series, and neither Elizabeth nor Sunny can recover quickly.
