"The Bondsman" Series: Action, Horror, and Comical Gore Through a Fugitive Hunter's Eyes
- Apr 10, 2025
Produced by Blumhouse and available on Prime Video, “The Bondsman” is a genre-bending action and horror series. Starring Kevin Bacon as Hub Halloran, the plot revolves around a bounty hunter turned demon tracker after a sudden murder and resurrection event. The once small-scale crook chaser now serves the Devil capturing escaped evils.
As Hub steps into his new role, a comical exaggeration of gore is introduced along with a variety of engaging characters. The blend of divine and vulgar elements mirrors the AMC series “Preacher.” Although “The Bondsman” is created by Grainger David and Erik Oleson and is not a comic book adaption, it draws its tonal influence from such works.
The series engages viewers initially with the hilarious absurdity of Hub’s predicament. From possessing priests to demonic cheerleaders, his hunting antics adds a rhythmic procedure to the plot. The macabre wit of “The Bondsman” is at its best when it wholeheartedly embraces its humorous side.

Being only eight episodes long, the series requires brisk progression from introduction to climax, leaving no room for an extensive middle section. Hub is a second-generation bondsman, following his mother's footsteps. The storyline expands and includes less captivating threads like Hub’s lingering feelings for his ex Maryanne.
Despite the series name suggesting focus on Hub’s profession, equal screen time is given to his personal life. However, the insertion of these personal narratives over time dampens the cheeky atmosphere that made the show appealing initially. The vague cosmology of the show is not an issue when it maintains its frivolousness.
As episodes unfurl, the stakes rapidly move from Hell's errands to world-saving ventures. Even though Kevin Bacon expertly portrays charming-yet-shady Hub, his charisma can't keep the series from losing steam. The excitement of “The Bondsman” dwindles much like Hub’s vintage truck running out of fuel. All episodes can now be viewed on Amazon Prime Video.
