Sydney Sweeney is close to sealing her involvement in Legendary’s forthcoming "Gundam" film. Serving as both writer and director, "Sweet Tooth" showrunner Jim Mickle is at the helm of the live-action adaptation, in conjunction with Bandai Namco Filmworks. Mickle and Linda Moran, through their Nightshade company, will also produce the project.

"Gundam" is an acclaimed Japanese military science fiction franchise that took the media world by storm since its inception in 1979 as a TV series, "Mobile Suit Gundam". Given its resounding success, the franchise has been expanded into animated films, novels, manga, merchandise, models, and video games since the 1980s.

The original series situates itself in a distant future where human colonies in space strive for autonomy from Earth, with their battles predominantly executed through giant robots referred to as Mobile Suits.

Legendary disclosed its plans for the "Gundam" movie in 2021, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts initially lined up to direct. Legendary currently holds plot and character details under lock and key and declined to comment further on the project.

Sweeney's recent on-screen contributions include roles in “Madame Web,” “Immaculate” and Ron Howard’s “Eden". She is due to feature in various upcoming projects including AppleTV+'s “Echo Valley” with Julianne Moore, “The Housemaid” - a Freida McFadden adaptation starring Amanda Seyfried, Colman Domingo’s “Scandalous” and is the lead in an untitled biopic where she portrays boxer Christy Martin.

Sweeney is also set to reprise her role in the hugely popular HBO series "Euphoria" for its third season, alongside Zendaya and Jacob Elordi. The first to break the news about Sweeney’s potential involvement in the "Gundam" project was The InSneider.
