Sweetpea (2024) - Series Review

Rhiannon Lewis, portrayed by Ella Purnell, might best be known to audiences for her role in Yellowjackets, but in the Starz drama series Sweetpea, her character's teenage angst has transformed into a much darker, more destructive rage. This British series effectively blurs the boundaries between revenge and cruelty, creating an engaging narrative along the way.

Rhiannon, a 26-year-old who works for a small-town newspaper editor, leads a life marked by frustration and unfulfilled expectations. Her past is scarred by bullying and humiliation, which has left her seeking restitution through a series of violent acts. Amidst the chaos, the rare moments of happiness she finds are with her beloved Chihuahua, Tink, and her ailing father, Tommy.

The show intentionally keeps viewers guessing about whether we're witnessing an oppressed individual asserting herself, or the development of a dangerous entity. There remains an air of uncertainty shadowing Rhiannon's actions as the series continually challenges its audience to question and reassess their views.

Despite its dark themes, the series creator Kirstie Swain (adapting from a C.J. Skuse novel) incorporates moments of satirical humor into the narrative. She portrays Rhiannon as a character who oscillates between villainy and victimhood – a complex representation that resonates deeply with viewers.

Ultimately, Sweetpea is a thrilling exploration of moral uncertainty. The finale leaves watchers anticipating many more unexpected turns, thereby promising a roller coaster ride of emotions and actions. Regardless of where Rhiannon's journey leads, audiences will be eagerly watching as her narrative unfolds in this world where she was once deemed insignificant.
