Sugar (2024) — Series Review

Our first introduction to the complex character of John Sugar (played by Colin Farrell), centers around his aversion to violence. As the story unfolds, we're forced to reconsider our initial assessment of John. Despite his obvious discomfort with violence, he often resorts to it, casting doubt on the reality of his character.

'Sugar' reinvents the traditional narrative, distinguishing itself from other detective thrillers such as 'True Detective' and 'Perry Mason', through unique character arcs and startling plot twists. The show intricately threads together John's exploits as he seeks to solve the mystery of a missing Hollywood producer’s granddaughter while wrestling with his own concealed secrets.

Engagingly, ‘Sugar’ isn't just a series about crime-solving; it’s a study in violence. John, despite his revulsion for violence, finds himself cornered into using it due to the demands of his profession. His inability to distance himself professionally from personal leanings complicates his mission as he's pulled deeper into the lives of those he investigates.

Despite his seasoned employment as a private detective, John has a surprising naivety toward human behaviour. His misplaced faith in humanity stands as an unwelcome barrier, inhibiting progress in his cases and abreast, his own personal closure. As John delves deeper into the mysteries surrounding the Siegel family, he begins to crack under the pressure, suggesting this particular case may be his undoing.

Farrell's performance, undoubtedly among his career-best, evokes anticipations for subsequent seasons.
