Spider-Man: No Way Home Primer

As movies continue to be released in theaters, we’re getting more and more major features and the holiday season will bring us one of the biggest - Spider-Man: No Way Home! It’s a bit early to know too much about this film, especially since Marvel and Sony have been very tight-lipped about it, but let’s take a look at what we do know and what we think may happen.

Spider-Man and the MCU

First off, it’s always good to note that Spider-Man is not owned by Marvel and so he isn’t a full member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the same way as Captain America or Thor. Spider-Man is owned by Sony. Sony has, of course, made multiple Spider-Man movies over the years, starring 3 different actors in the role

  • Tom Holland - the current Spider-Man
  • Andrew Garfield - who played the character in two movies in The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2.
  • Toby Maguire - Spider-Man 1, 2, and 3.

Sony and Marvel came up with an agreement that lets Spider-Man show up in a certain number of MCU movies and various MCU characters can show up in Spider-Man movies. So, Spider-Man is and isn’t a full part of the MCU in that sense.

What’s it About?

At the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, his secret identity as Peter Parker was revealed to the world. The new film appears to pick up soon after, with Peter dealing with the fallout of everyone knowing he is Spider-Man. He also appears to have some legal problems stemming from defeating Mysterio in the previous movie. Mysterio set it up to look like Spider-Man murdered him and now Peter is dealing with the consequences.

We get a scene where he visits Dr. Strange and asks him if he could make the world forget it knows his secret identity. Strange agrees and as he is casting his spell, Spider-Man begins to have concerns, since his girlfriend and best friend won’t remember either. Something happens during the spell and things go very wrong.  (Shocker!)

We then see what could be the Multiverse coming into play in the trailer. We are also teased a few cameos or larger roles from some past Spider-Man movies villains.

Who is in it?

Spider-Man: No Way Home Primer

Well, this is the big question that everyone is asking.  Who is in this movie!  Rumors have been running rampant about a return of past Spier-Man actors and all when the Multiverse storyline kicked into high gear in the Disney Plus MCU series Loki, it all started to make sense. So, let’s see what we know.

Definitely in the Movie

  • The current Spider-Man cast (Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, etc.)
  • From the MCU:  Dr. Strange and Wong.
  • From Past Spider-Man Movies: Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina)

Who do we think will be in the movie?

  • Past Villains: Green Goblin (Willem Defoe - we hear his voice in the trailer), Electro (Jamie Foxx - strong rumors on this one).
  • Past Heroes: Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire.
  • Other Characters: Venom (Tom Hardy - because of the mid-credit sene in Venom: Let There Be Carnage)

Who Might Show up?

  • Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and possibly Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) from the Netflix Series.
  • Basically, there is a huge potential cast of characters. We can’t wait to see who is actually in the movie!

When does it come out?

Spider-Man: No Way Home will be released in theaters on December 17, 2021. We assume it will follow with a release on Disney Plus at a later date, but there is no word on how much time before it hits the streaming service.
