Space: The Longest Goodbye (2024) - Documentary Review

The new documentary "Space: The Longest Goodbye" by Ido Mizrahy, explores the emotional challenges and psychological effects of extended space missions. From the viewpoint of an astronaut missing the familiar sounds and feelings that Earth provides to the challenges NASA faces in preparing astronauts for long-duration space travel.

The documentary delves deeper into the individual stories of astronauts Cady Coleman and Kayla Barron, to explore the profound impact of long-period missions on their relationships and family planning. These personal account, reveal a hidden layer of emotional turmoil, often concealed by astronauts to remain active in the program.

Despite presenting expert insights from behavioral scientists, psychologists, and virtual reality pioneers on addressing the psychological impacts of space travel, the documentary doesn't question these solutions. It overlooks the potential of arts and humanities as an alternative means for improving astronauts' well-being in space. Moreover, the documentary does not adequately discuss the concept of self-sacrifice, which according to Mars simulation crew commander Sukjin Han, is essential for the success of manned Mars missions.

Space: The Longest Goodbye (2024) - Documentary Review

Technically, its monotone editing and under-exposed interview scenes lend a gloomy feel to the film. This approach fails to inspire enthusiasm or convey the human accomplishment potential that a Mars mission could signify. The film concludes with a darkly underscored confession from Coleman expressing her willingness to extend her time in space, which undermines the positive dedication such a statement represents.

With several underdeveloped themes, conflicting messages, and a general lack of explorative questioning, "Space: The Longest Goodbye" leaves viewers with an ambiguous and dreary impression of prolonged space travel.
