The new documentary about the legendary musician Sly Stone, 'Sly Lives!', is set to premiere on Hulu on Thursday, February 13. This in-depth piece directed by renowned Roots founder and Oscar-winning filmmaker Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson revolves around Sly Stone's enormous legacy. The documentary, subtitled “aka the Burden of Black Genius," comes via Disney’s Onyx Collective, featuring high-profile guests such as Andre 3000, D'Angelo, Chaka Khan, Q-Tip, Nile Rogers, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis, among others. It also includes testimonials from Sly's bandmates, The Family Stone, and his family members.
Sly and The Family Stone made their debut in the turbulent 60s San Francisco Bay area and swiftly rose to prominence. They were known for their diverse lineup and unique blend of pop, soul, and rock. Despite their overwhelming success, problems arose when drugs and ego consumed the band's frontman, Sly. While there were a few comeback tries later in his career, Sly ultimately led a secluded and often troubled life.
The production of 'Sly Lives!' involved the same creative team behind Onyx Collective’s Oscar-winning documentary "Summer of Soul (…Or When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised).” The team includes director Questlove, producer Joseph Patel, and editor Josh Pearson. The film is a cooperation between MRC, Network Entertainment Inc., Two One Five Entertainment Inc., RadicalMedia, Stardust Films LLC, and ID8 Multimedia Inc., associated with Sony Music Entertainment.
