Shifting Gears (2025) — Series Review

Nostalgia sure runs high for fans of Tim Allen's earlier work, and embarking on his new ABC show, 'Shifting Gears', I carried a bit of skepticism. However, the show quickly warmed my heart, invoking both tears and laughter.

Allen's character in the series, Matt, is a widower who runs an auto-repair shop. He leads a solitary life after his wife's demise until his daughter Riley, played by Kat Dennings, returns to town with her two children, seeking a temporary shelter as she handles her divorce. Riley, in her mid-life, experiences remorse over her youthful decisions.

As they all reunite without the mother’s presence, the father and daughter battle some initial hiccups, being two strong personalities looking to carve a new dynamic. The compelling storyline, with captivating performances by Dennings and Allen, provides a perfect sitcom set-up that beautifully balances humor and emotionally charged moments.

'Shifting Gears' belongs to the traditional comedy shows filmed in front of a live audience, giving it more of a theatrical feel. Our characters frequently pause to accommodate the viewers' reactions and ensure their visibility. While the lack of realism may strike some, the series still beautifully encapsulates the essence of genuine family ties and the importance of forgiveness, in a light-hearted manner.

Shifting Gears (2025) — Series Review

Allen skillfully uses verbal humor, with Dennings demonstrating strong comedic timing. Together, their characters, Matt and Riley, navigate through intergenerational conflicts, offering theme-rich content regarding grandson Carter's anxiety accommodations, screen time debates, and more.

Throughout the series, they manage to overcome the hurdles with the help of their vibrant loved ones. Seann William Scott's character, Gabriel, serves as a distraction for Riley's divorce proceedings. Brenda Song, playing the vice-principal at the high school, adds her amusingly neurotic dynamic to the series.

'Shifting Gears' excels because of the believable execution by Allen and Dennings as a long-estranged father-daughter duo attempting to resolve their issues. They offer a mix of comedy and true sentimentality. Whilst embroiled in personal disputes and differing ambitions, the duo succeeds in finding ways to foster their relationship, supported by the series of laughter.

The show, having premiered on ABC on January 8th, has aired two episodes and promises to deliver many more heartwarming stories about love, family, and growth.
