Why fix what isn’t broken? Here’s a list of films so good we can’t resist the sequel. We’re pretty excited for some of these!
Knives Out 2 (2022)
Daniel Craig takes on his role again as premier detective, Benoit Blanc, in Rian Johnson's whodunnit sequel. Joining the cast this time is Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Jessica Henwick and Ethan Hawke. It’s reported to be a Netflix film this time, instead of hitting the silver screens first.
Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
Our most beloved, favorite, cult classic Halloween movie is getting a sequel almost 30 years in the making. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are back to their witchy ways on Disney Plus. As undead witches, I’m not sure how their natural aging will be incorporated but I am excited for this nonetheless.
Jackass Forever (Feb. 4, 2022)
Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Wee Man and the crew reunite for more pranks with celebrity guests including Eric André, Shaquille O'Neal, Tony Hawk, Machine Gun Kelly and Tyler the Creator. Not much else to say here as I’ve never been a huge Jackass fan, but I can only imagine how many loyal followers will be excited for this one.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (April 15, 2022)
As a massive Harry Potter fan and nerd from childhood, this might be the one I am most arguably excited about. Jude Law is Dumbledore once again alongside Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander in this Harry Potter prequel series. Who you won’t see is Johnny Depp as Grindelwald anymore, following domestic violence allegations to his estranged ex-wife a couple years ago. He has been replaced by Mads Mikkelsen.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 6, 2022)
This Doctor Strange follow up is set to take place after his appearance in Spider Man: No Way Home.
Top Gun: Maverick (May 27, 2022)
Another film almost 30 years in the making, Tom Cruise reprises his most well-known role as Maverick in a Top Gun sequel. Not sure if IceMan (Val Kilmer) will make an appearance, but we will all be missing Goose!
Jurassic World: Dominion (June 10, 2022)
Our favorite Jurassic Park OG’s Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill and Laura Dern return to the Park for a big dino finale alongside Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard from the most recent sequels.
Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8, 2022)
Taika Waititi returns to direct the fourth Thor movie, starring Chris Hemsworth as Thor, alongside Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Jaimie Alexander, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Jeff Goldblum and Vin Diesel. I’ve heard we’re going to see Natalie Portman take up the she-Thor shield soon and I expect this is where that storyline starts.
Black Adam (July 29, 2022)
Dwayne Johnson is, for once, playing the bad guy in this Shazam sequel. He’ll play the role of Black Adam who uses the Shazam powers for evil.
Mission: Impossible 7 (Sept. 30, 2022)
Tom Cruise hits our screens again in the same year with another big sequel in the Mission Impossible franchise. This guy really doesn’t quit it. Good for him.
Halloween Ends (Oct. 14, 2022)
We’ll see our heroine, Jamie Lee Curtis, face off with serial slasher Michael Myers yet again, following the 2018 reboot and delayed sequel Halloween Kills.
The Flash (Nov. 4, 2022)
DC is still picking up the pace with their multiverse library. We’ll see Ezra Miller, who’s carrying the Flash mantle, get his own movie as he faces Michael Keaton’s Batman.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Nov. 11, 2022)
The Black Panther sequel stars the same cast from the first movie with Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett and Dominique Thorne. However, Marvel decided to honor Chadwick Boseman and not recast the role of T'Challa.
Creed III (Nov. 23, 2022)
Michael B. Jordan not only gets back in the ring for this sequel to the Creed and Rocky films, but also directs. I’m not sure I have a ton of confidence in that but Rocky/Creed following is such a cult, there’s no doubt to be a lot of hype around this one.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (Dec. 16, 2022)
Honestly, the first Aquaman kind of sucked. Or maybe it was just me? The DC superhero movies are just a step behind Marvel. Nonetheless, Jason Momoa, Nicole Kidman, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II dive back in for more underwater action in DC's Aquaman 2.
Avatar 2 (Dec. 16, 2022)
James Cameron delivers movie gold and then disappears. His renowned sci-fi movie, Avatar, broke box office records over ten years ago but no sequel was heard of. Until now. And apparently we’ll be getting four of them.
