While we wait for some exciting movies and shows to hit theaters and steaming services this fall, let’s check out some of the recent trailers to give us a hint about what’s coming.
The Wheel of Time (Amazon Prime Series)
We’ve been hearing bits and pieces of info from Amazon Prime about this upcoming series, coming on November 19, 2021, but just this week we finally got the first trailer! I’ll be honest, I’m a bit of a fanboy of the novels, so I’ve been looking forward to this one. The trailer looks action-packed, filled with swords and sorcery and monsters. The trailer makes it look like the series is based strongly on the character of Moiraine, a woman who wields magic as a member of the Aes Sedai. She is a key character in the first novel, which the series is based on, but is also not the main character. So, it will be interesting to see if there is actually a shift in the focus of the series or if they are simply keeping the true main character (Rand Al’ Thor) in the background for now.
Level of Anticipation - High. This is definitely on my must-watch list for November.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (Marvel Theatrical Release)
Another long-awaited trailer after so many rumors flying around about who is in it. The trailer sets up the story where the world now knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. He is also being framed for the murder of Mysterio, which was his last act before dying in the last film. Peter decides the best thing would be for everyone to have never known that he is Spider-Man. He asks Dr. Strange to go back in time to change Mysterio’s last act that revealed Spider-Man to the world. This leads to them tampering with the timeline and becoming exposed to the multiverse (see Loki). We know for sure we will see Doctor Octopus (from a previous Spider-Man franchise) and the Green Goblin. Will we see other versions of Spider-Man? I’m saying yes.
Level of Anticipation - High. I have really enjoyed the previous two Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland, and I remember the previous 2 series fondly (not so much including Spider-Man 3). Looking forward to this one in December!
Red Notice (Netflix Original Film)
Netflix brings us a fun caper/heist/action extravaganza starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot on November 12. The trailer introduces us to FBI agent Johnson, master thief Reynold, and villain, Gadot. It’s a fun pairing of actors, who look to be having some fun in the trailer. Johnson and Reynolds have to team up to catch Gadot in what looks like a world-romping thriller.
Level of Anticipation - Medium. It looks like fun, but I’m glad it’s coming to streaming rather than a theater.
Moonfall (Theatrical Release)
The director of Independence Day, 2012, and The Day After Tomorrow (Roland Emmerich) brings us a new disaster thriller. While things were bad in those movies, this time our nemesis is our own moon, which appears to be either breaking up or simply heading toward a collision with the earth. The trailer shows what might be aliens or alien technology, but it’s hard to say. It is one big fast-cut mashup of disaster scenes. Not sure how the earth is going to come out on the other side of this one.
Level of Anticipation - Medium to Low. At this point, I’m not sure it won’t be just a big silly overblown mess. But, I’m giving it medium anticipation, just in case.
No Time to Die (Theatrical Release)
James Bond (Daniel Craig) is back for one last ride! I have liked pretty much all the Daniel Craig Bond movies, so this starts off with some expectations for me. At the same time, after seemingly 50 James Bond movies dating back decades, can they really do anything new? We’ll know on October 8, but in the meantime, we get this trailer showing the typical Bond action and intrigue. I still have Craig right up there as maybe the second-best Bond after Connery, and he continues to exude the cool menace that has become his trademark in the role as we see tons of action and get a hint of the big plot to bring down the world (we assume).
Level of Anticipation - Medium to High. I know I’ll see it. I just hope we get a great send-off for Craig as Bond.
