Hacks, Season 3 (2024) — Series Review

After a gripping finale in its second season, "Hacks" was left with a challenging path ahead when Deborah Vance (portrayed by Jean Smart), an experienced stand-up artist, dismissed her younger writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). Despite appearing to have backed itself into a corner with this development, the much-awaited third season, premiering on May 2, showcases a remarkable comeback for the applauded TV series.

Any concern over adapting to this significant switch or returning after a longer break than expected seems effortlessly managed by the creative team behind the show. The series dances back on screen with contagious confidence, deceptive ease, and continuous humour. Its creators, Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky, brilliantly utilize the tension that exists between two characters who continuously intrigue their audience.

The third season also employs a time leap, a well-established method in storytelling to circumvent obstacles. A year following season two's conclusion, Deborah is enjoying her creative revival while Ava, co-producing a topical news show. Both women seem to have fondly set themselves in their individual circles.

However, despite the favourable circumstances, neither Deborah nor Ava has fully achieved their aspirations. They are merely closer to their goals. Intriguingly, an unexpected reunion of the former colleagues at Montreal's Just for Laughs festival provides the framework for season three, presenting an opportunity for redemption.
