Simon and his wife Paula were returning from supper when they unexpectedly came across a girl who was solitary and wandering down the road. The youngster, who has been admitted to a nearby hospital, appears to be in extremely poor physical and mental health. However, they search for her parents or look into any possible missing girl reports.
Spanish and German linguistic barriers make communication challenging. They decide to temporarily allow her into their house two weeks later after learning that no one has claimed her to assist her and salvage their relationship. Even so, it won’t be easy. The girl is fixated on the notion that something horrible would happen to her if she left a square chalked on the ground.
Paula, who has forged an emotional connection with the youngster, will set off on a trek through shadowy terrain to unravel the mystery of the girl’s background. Until she spoke to Paula, the girl was thought to be mute. The adoptive parents also seemed to be struggling through a difficult time.
They had long wanted to have children but haven’t been able to. When Clara shows up, her maternal instincts kick in, and she feels compelled to do everything it takes to keep her safe. As time goes on, it becomes clear that Paula is administering reproductive treatments behind her husband’s back rather than insulin shots.
As strangely terrible things start happening in their home, the couple may have made a grave error in embracing this youngster. The movie radically switches its plot from horror to a murder mystery thriller in the second half, though.
