Netflix's 'Back in Action' promises a dose of exhilarating, family-friendly entertainment, showcasing the return of Hollywood A-listers Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz. Director Seth Gordon successfully balances dynamic vehicular chases and physical altercations, serving a hearty helping of action-packed fun.
Foxx and Diaz, who first shared the screen in Oliver Stone’s 1999 sports drama 'Any Given Sunday', then reprised in the 2014 film, 'Annie', make a natural pair. Diaz had previously retired from acting but her electric on-screen chemistry with Foxx sees her return to celluloid after 11 years.
The strength laid in their understanding portrayal of romantic leads combined with adroit combat skills contributes significantly to the movie’s panache. Foxx, having recovered from a life-threatening stroke during the end of the movie's shoot, impresses with his remarkable physical performance, providing cheer for his fans. In contrast, references to 90's action flicks give the movie a sense of nostalgia.
The plot delves into the lives of undercover CIA agents, Matt (Foxx) and Emily (Diaz), fifteen years ago during the early stage of their romantic relationship and Emily’s pregnancy. They are tasked to get their hands on a master-key capable of controlling any system in the world while fending off foreign terrorists unarmed. They eventually decide to recede into a normal life, disappearing from their handler, Chuck (Kyle Chandler), and raising their family in an undisclosed American suburb.
Their cover, however, breaks after an online video of their spy-like tactics goes viral. Soon, the couple is back in action, engaging in high-speed chases and surviving assassination attempts while protecting their family. There are also impressive action set pieces, including the taking down of assassins at a gas station in London, which only hints at their real identities.
Without much left for the couple to hide, they disclose their past. As part of the story progression, they also pay a visit to Emily’s mother, Ginny (Glenn Close), revealing another layer to Emily’s guarded personality. The addition of Ginny brings in a sprinkle of droll humor which blends seamlessly with the intense action sequences.
The story comes to a thrilling conclusion with a Chase down the Thames, a few unexpected character reveals, and a closer family bond. While not a classic action-comedy flick, 'Back in Action' provides a befitting blend of entertainment that sits well with the viewers.
