The Last Journey (2024) - Movie Review

Displaying a blend of humor and pathos, "The Last Journey" is a heart-warming presentation of director Filip Hammar's affection for his aging father, Lars. The film follows Filip and his friend and co-director, Fredrik Wikingsson, as they attempt to instill some life into the elderly Lars by bringing him back to the French seaside town - the site of their past holidays. Even though the intention is to kindle the older man's joie de vivre, Filip must confront the harsh effects of old age and the inevitable progression of time. Aside from its personal narrative, the film also serves as a homage to teachers and reinforcement of the lasting impact they have.

In Sweden, the documentary has been a hit, breaking box office records with over 400,000 admissions, holding its presence in theaters for over 32 weeks. Notably, the film is Sweden’s choice for international feature film representation - it has the potential to be an unexpected contender.

The film is the debut feature for both Hammar and Wikingsson, previously known as distinctive TV personalities, podcast hosts, and writers in Sweden. Their distinctively spontaneous and anarchic flair is noticeable in "The Last Journey”, which cleverly incorporates home videos and audio clips from the Hammar family.

The Last Journey (2024) - Movie Review

When Lars, who was a high school French teacher, retired in 2008 at 66, he envisioned a fruitful “third age”. However, by 2022, he is plagued by puzzling aches and barely wants to leave his armchair. Lars' lively wife, Tiina, confides to Filip that Lars seems to have lost his energy. Consequently, Filip comes up with the misguided idea of restoring his father's health and spirits by driving him in their former family car, an orange Renault 4, to his favourite part of France, Beaulieu-sur-Mer. Despite unexpected challenges, the journey allows for stunning cinematography of the regional landscape.

Throughout the film, it becomes evident Filip remembers more of the family vacation traditions than Lars does. Even though Lars may not display the vigor that Filip remembers, he proves to be observant and practical - a humble man with an earnest love for France.

Some of the film's funniest sequences occur as Filip and Fredrik re-enact moments that once amused Lars. A poignant scene towards the end of the movie involving a beach and a surprise is sure to stir up emotions in viewers. The documentary's heartening score and the use of French songs complement the overall feel of the film, creating a captivating viewing experience.
