After their parents’ death in 1653 Salem, Reverend Traske (Tony Hale) decides Winifred Sanderson (Taylor Henderson) should marry John Pritchett and her sisters, Sarah (Juju Journey Brener) and Mary (Nina Kitchen), should live with another family.
Winifred refuses, and the sisters escape to the woods. Mother Witch (Hannah Waddingham) shapeshifts from a crow, gives them a spellbook, and warns against increasing their powers with the Magicae Maxima spell.
In modern-day Salem, high school students Becca (Whitney Peak) and Izzy (Belissa Escobedo) celebrate Becca’s Halloween birthday. Their friend, Cassie Traske (Lilia Buckingham), spends time with her boyfriend.
At his magic store, Gilbert (Sam Richardson) gives the pair a black candle. They know the legend but light the candle anyway. Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker), and Mary (Kathy Najimy) appear. After seeing a campaign flyer, the sisters seek revenge on Reverend Traske’s descendant, Mayor Jerry Traske (also Tony Hale).
Back at the magic shop, they learn that Gilbert planned for them to resurrect the sisters. The sisters trap the teens in the basement and search for Mayor Traske.
Winifred decides to cast the Magicae Maxima spell. The sisters compel Gilbert to gather the components but need Traske’s blood to complete the spell.
The friends escape and find Cassie, Mayor Traske’s daughter. They trap the sisters in a circle of salt. The sisters escape and kidnap Cassie. Becca and Izzy follow the sisters to the woods and learn that Becca is a witch. Winifred starts the Magicae Maxima spell, but Becca distracts her while Izzy rescues Cassie.
Freed from obeying Winifred, the spellbook explains the Magicae Maxima takes something cherished. Failing to warn Winifred or revive her sisters, the friends reunite them. As they walk into the night with the spellbook, a crow flies overhead. Watch on Disney Plus.
