Where we Left Off
At the end of episode 5, Reacher and Neagley had just escaped from yet another attempt on their lives. Neagley plans to continue her investigation, while Reacher heads back to Margrave. In the big twist, Finlay discovered Kliner’s murdered body in his office. If Kliner’s dead, who is behind all this?
An Empty Truck
Finlay and Reacher ramp up their investigation into Kliner by following one of their trucks, which it turns out was empty. Reacher changes his theory about the counterfeiting operation. He deduces it wasn’t about bringing counterfeit money into the U.S., but sending it out.
Reacher reaches out to the two college professors that Joe was in touch with during his investigation. The first turns out to have been murdered upon returning to the U.S. the previous day. But, Reacher is in luck with the last professor. He tells her to immediately go to the NYPD and ask for protective custody and then heads to New York.
The Big Apple
Reacher meets with Professor Castillo who confirms the theory that Kliner has been shipping counterfeit money to a client outside the U.S. (in Venezuela). She explains the process they are using. First, they wash the dye out of $1 bills and then reprinting them with an older version of the $100. Included are magnetic strips and holographic images. The full size of the operation begins to come into focus.
Reacher spots another assassin in NY after leaving Castillo under the protection of a police officer who is another former Army soldier. It leads to a chase through NY and Reacher eventually strangles him on a fire escape, leaving yet another body in his wake.
More Assassins!
Roscoe has been keeping an eye on Charlie Hubble and her two daughters at the remote cabin set up by Picard. But, to no one’s surprise, more assassins show up, ready to kill them all. But, we’ve already seen that Roscoe is no pushover and she outwits and kills the assassins after a fight in the woods.
They then head to a diner to meet back up with Picard. Charlie finally admits that she knows all about her husband’s business with Kliner, explaining how he was tricked into laundering money for the criminal organization and then forced to watch a man being crucified to show what will happen if he tries to walk away or betray them.
The Scheme is Revealed
The big picture is coming together, as we now understand the nature of the counterfeiting plot and Joe’s interest in it. As a secret service agent, Joe was tasked with watching the single source of paper for U.S. currency. It’s this investigation that got him killed.
