When we left off last week, Reacher, Finlay and Roscoe had just gone to meet Molly Beth (Joe’s assistant) in Atlanta and get copies of Joe’s investigative files. Unfortunately, Molly Beth was murdered before they could reach her.
Repercussions
Reacher and the crew return to Margrave after Molly Beth’s killing and disvoer that Roscoe’s car has been vandalized by KT Kliner, the son and budding psychopath in the Kliner family. Lured into creating a scene in a local restaurant, Reacher assaults KT, his cousin, and a hired thug.
However, the elder Kliner declines to press charges, since he know that doing so would allow Reacher’s attorneys to request potentially incriminating documentation from Kliner’s crooked company.
The Key
A more thorough search of the box that contained the Desert Eagle reveals a secret compartment with a key. They next speak with the local barber, who was friends with Gray and discover that he left a trunk for Roscoe to find in the event of his death.
The trunk contains Gray’s research into Kliner and the company’s involvement in a massive counterfeiting scheme. While there is no evidence they can take to court, the group is now more convinced than ever that Kliner is behind it all.
During discussions about Roscoe’s mentor (Gray) the crew begins to wonder if he actually committed suicide after all. Roscoe visits the coroner, who pulls up autopsy photos showing that he may actually have been beaten before being hung.
The shape of the wounds suggests the perpetrator was Teal, with his diamond topped walking stick. Roscoe can’t help but confront him, punching him in the face before Finlay can get her out of town. He sends her to replace Picard, who has continued to watch the Hubble family at a remote cabin.
Reacher Calls for Reinforcements
Reacher heads to Memphis to meet with PI and former member of his Army investigative team, Neagley. They enlist the aid of a Memphis cop who was investigating the case prior to Joe getting involved. The cop connects Reacher and Neagley with a hitman who shares important information.
But, on the way back to the station, the cop’s partner shoots him and is clearly planning the same for Reacher and Neagley. They force the car off the road and into a river where they give the cop the choice of going back to the police department and facing justice for murdering his own partner, which will also trigger his own assassination by the Kliner group, along with his family, or he can drown in the river. He chooses to drown.
A Surprising Twist
In the final scene, Finlay has decided to break into the Kliner corporate headquarters and inside he finds the dead body of Kliner sitting at his desk with his throat slit.
Have to say, the action is ramping up! With 3 episodes left, we have a lot to resolve.
If Kliner is dead, who is running the show now?
Who else is in on it at the Margrave police department?
Who is in the brutal murder squad that has been torturing and murdering people?
How far up does this criminal enterprise go?
