We’re back with our recap of episode 3 of Amazon’s Reacher streaming series. When we left off at the end of episode 2, Reacher and Roscoe had spent a platonic night together in a motel out of state.
The Threats Strike Closer to Home
When Reacher and Roscoe get back to Margrave, they stop by Roscoe’s house on the way to the station. They discover that it has been broken into and a message is left for Roscoe making it clear that her life is in immediate danger. We assume it is the same people who killed Reacher’s brother Joe and the police chief.
We also get our first deeper glimpse into Roscoe’s character. She’s not afraid, she’s angry. People coming into her home to kill her sets her off. She also finally agrees that Reacher needs to be armed. She brings down an old wooden box from her closet. A gift from her mentor at the police department, who killed himself the year before. Inside the box is a handgun sized properly for Reacher. For those with an interest in firearms, it is a Desert Eagle. Not sure what caliber this version is, but it’s a big gun that shoots big bullets.
It’s clear that Roscoe and Finlay are now being targeted, so they both agree it’s time to go into hiding while they continue the investigation.
Kliner Industries at the Center of the Web
The team splits up, with Reacher visiting a lawyer for Kliner industries while Finlay heads to the home of the second murder victim, a truck driver for Kliner. Reacher uses his form of gentle persuasion on the lawyer, to give up his file on the truck driver. Finlay breaks into the victim’s home but is spotted by a neighbor, who calls the police. Local police assume Finlay (in his three-piece suit) is a burglar and beat him as they take him into custody. This is the deep South and Finlay is black.
Roscoe gets Finlay out of jail, standing up to the racist cops who arrested him. Then the trio meet back up to compare notes. Roscoe heads off to get ready to stay in a remote motel, while Reacher and Finlay arrange a meeting with Kliner at his office. He is none too pleased with their investigation and threatens them to drop the investigation. Reacher remains largely quiet while Finlay is having none of it. The two leave, having clearly put Kliner at the top of their suspect list for being being whatever criminal enterprise is happening in Margrave.
Do Not Mess with Reacher
Reacher notices he is being followed by the South American assassins from the previous episode and leads them out into a deep rural area. He ditches his car and catches the two assassins by surprise, killing them both. He then discovers Spivey’s body in the trunk of their car. Spivey had been onf of Reacher’s key leads to follow up on, so he is more than a little disappointed to find him dead.
Reacher’s Brother
A quick note aobut Joe Reacher. He was working for a government agency the last time Reacher spoke with him, some years back. Reacher isn’t quite sure what he was involved with, but strongly suspects it has to do with an investigation he would have been involved with.
Another strong episode! Onward to episode 4.
