The upcoming movie "Queer," featuring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey from "Outer Banks," has presented its first trailer, released by A24. The film is directed by Luca Guadagnino, who is known for his work on "Challengers" and "Call Me By Your Name," with a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes.
Set in the 1940s Mexico City, the film is based on the semi-autobiographical novel by William Burroughs. It tells the story of William Lee (played by Craig), an American expat who lives in relative isolation among American college students and bar owners. Lee develops a keen interest in a released American Navy serviceman, Eugene Allerton (Starkey), a substance abuser who ultimately reciprocates Lee's affection after initially being unresponsive. The film's supporting cast features Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, and Omar Apollo.
"Queer" premiered globally at the Venice International Film Festival and was in the running for the prestigious Golden Lion. It later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.
Luca Guadagnino, the director, has referred to "Queer" as a profoundly personal film that explores the unavoidable search for acknowledgment in another person's view, as seen through the eyes of the renowned William Burroughs. Praise for the film has already begun circulating, most notably from Variety film critic Owen Glieberman who appreciated Craig's performance, calling it "bold, funny and alive."
