The Diplomat (2024) - Series Review

After a promising first season, Netflix's political drama, "The Diplomat", returns with a more confident and captivating narrative. Starring Keri Russell as the newly appointed American ambassador to the UK, the show seamlessly combines international intrigue reminiscent of "Homeland", witty dialogue mirroring "The West Wing", and the emotional intensity familiar to fans of "Scandal".

Season 2 picks up right after a riveting cliff-hanger involving a car bombing that left the series' protagonists, Kate Wyler (Russell) and her husband Hal, played by Rufus Sewell, in a critical situation. The new season is focussed, with the episode count trimmed to just six instalments, allowing for a more concise and engaging storytelling.

With the direction of seasoned showrunner Debora Cahn, the series tackles the aftermath of the bombing with urgency and precision. As Kate delves into political warfare against Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear), suspected of orchestrating a false flag operation on a British naval ship, viewers are treated to a better grasp of the intricacies of her daring job.

The serenity found in the series’ day-to-day canvas gives way to a high-stakes juggling act that brings to the fore Russell's formidable acting chops. From managing diplomatic responsibilities to uncomfortable discussions and revelations about her volatile marriage, the protagonist's varied trials form the backbone of this gripping saga.

Notwithstanding the show's riveting plotline, it also garners attention for its detailed imagery and illustrations of the demanding life of diplomats. High-level espionage, diplomatic terminology, and stunning locations combine to provide an authentic viewing experience.

However, the character development of “The Diplomat” might be its Achilles heel, particularly in its portrayal of Russell as the plain, straightforward Kate. Despite these issues, the addition of Allison Janney as Vice President Grace Penn in the second season is a welcome one, providing a counterbalance to Kate's bold character while highlighting the challenges women face in powerful positions.

Eager audiences can immerse themselves in the intriguing and action-packed world of "The Diplomat" when all six episodes of Season 2 premiere on Netflix on October 31.
