Following the high popularity of Netflix's "Quarterback" last summer, expectations were high for a sequel or spin-off. While initially rumored to be facing challenges due to privacy issues, Netflix managed to pleasantly surprise football lovers with its newest 8-part series, "Receiver".
Despite a slight sense of advertisement rather than behind-the-scenes insight, the documentary's portrayal of an entire season through the gaze of five different players from four teams presented a captivating narrative. Among them are Amon-Ra St. Brown, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Justin Jefferson, and Davante Adams.
The series was praised for its genuine storytelling although some viewers felt the focus occasionally seemed to shift towards a highlight reel of each player's season rather than the rigid realities and personal struggles in their career. For example, Justin Jefferson's physically taxing season, including an incident which involved him spitting up blood, was highlighted and appreciated for its authenticity.
The series also shed light on the personal lives of these athletes, further humanizing them. For instance, Adams spoke about sacrificing time with his children in order to maintain professional commitments.
"Receiver" though enjoyable for avid football fans, can also appeal to the casual viewer. With all this, given the trend Netflix has established with "Quarterback" and now "Receiver", it's anticipated that the next series might focus on a new position altogether, perhaps highlighting the life and challenges of running backs in the NFL. Now available on Netflix, the new series gives viewers a different perspective on the world of football, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the sport and its players.
