Masters of the Universe has been the next long-awaited live action adaptation of a popular comic franchise. Netflix has picked up the rights for the live action adaptation, and just announced they cast Kyle Allen as the lead of He-Man.
Masters of the Universe
For those of you that don't know, Masters of the Universe comes from Mattel. Yes, the toymaker. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe actually started off as muscle-y action figures in the '80s, eventually moving to a TV cartoon show, before the franchise blossomed.
However, unlike Marvel and other comic franchises which seem to have more of a root in sci-fi, Masters of the Universe is sword and sorcery themed.
The Masters of the Universe is a tale about an orphan boy named Adam. He discovers that he is actually a prince, whose destiny it is to be the savior of a far away land. On his journey, he learns how to use his power and save his real home from the evil Skeletor.
Netflix Adaptation
This isn't the first time Masters of the Universe has tried to be adapted for the big screen. In the late '80s, the TV cartoon was so popular we saw the first live-action version in 1987.
More recently, Sony got the rights to the next adaptation, where they cast To All the Boys star Noah Centineo as He-Man. The Nee brothers were also set to direct this one.
Fortunately, they are still attached to the project at Netflix. The Nee brothers are credited with The Lost City, as well as Shang-Chi andn the Legend of the 10 Rings and Wonderwoman 84.
Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will produce, along with DeVon Franklin. Robbie Brenner and Kevin McKeon will oversee the project for Mattel Films.
Cast
No word yet on the other cast members. But Kyle Allen has been cast as the role of our main character, He-Man.
Allen has most recently appeared onscreen in Steven Spielberg’s reimagining of the classic musical West Side Story. His other credits include the series American Horror Story and The Path, as well as the coming-of-age feature The Map of Tiny Perfect Things. He is repped by UTA, Management 360 and Hansen Jacobson.
What To Expect
There is no release date yet but production is set to begin this summer.
