Daniela Forever (2024) - Movie Review

'Daniela Forever', directed by Nacho Vigalondo, is an intense exploration of grief, depression, and the complex web of memory. The protagonist, Nicolas (played by Henry Golding), spirals into intense depression after the death of his girlfriend, Daniela (portrayed by Beatrice Grannò). Incredible grief marks every aspect of Nicolas' life, and he begins to seek relief from his tormenting memories.

The film, which made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, provides a unique take on the concept of memory alteration and lucid dreaming, akin to 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' but with a sci-fi twist like 'Fingernails'. Nicolas partakes in an experimental drug treatment hoping to assuage his depression. The peculiar drug doesn't erase his memories but instead allows him to experience an artificial world where Daniela is still alive. He can re-experience their shared moments and create new ones by combining his past and recent memories.

The film's visual aesthetics, courtesy of the cinematography by Jon D. Dominguez, add a distinctive flair to an already intriguing premise. Nicolas' reality is represented through a constricting 4:3 aspect ratio and the nostalgic aesthetics of an old-fashioned camcorder, while the dream sequences are brought to life in high-resolution widescreen with vibrant colors and a touch of the surreal.

Daniela Forever (2024) - Movie Review

However, 'Daniela Forever' doesn’t entirely hit its mark. The narrative drifts away from director Vigalondo, and the storyline often wanders aimlessly without substantial stakes. Despite this, Golding and Grannò deliver fine performances that occasionally push the narrative boundaries, portraying grief-stricken and nuanced characters.

The film explores interesting ideas about dream mechanics and memory control, but it ends on a slightly confusing note. As Nicolas gets more entwined between his dreams and reality, the film also seems to lose its way. 'Daniela Forever' is an intriguing yet puzzling movie that seems uncertain of its own direction, leaving audiences contemplative and reflective.
