My Lady Jane (2024) — Series Review

In the period dramedy "My Lady Jane," Prime Video gives a fresh, fantastical spin to the story of Lady Jane Grey, the 16-year-old who was Queen of England for just nine days. The series eschews historical accuracy for comedic, engaging storytelling filled with magic, romance, and empowered female characters who shape their own destinies.

The narrative begins with a lively narrator who invites viewers to discard their knowledge of Tudor history. The show introduces Lady Jane Grey, played by Emily Bader, not as a tragic queen but as an aspiring herbalist treating her maid's feminine ailment with a homemade remedy. Despite her dreams, her ambitious mother, Lady Frances Grey, seeks a politically advantageous marriage for Jane.

The series touches the universal theme of arranged marriages, but it is Jane's world, where a conflict between Verity purebloods (ordinary humans) and Ethians (shape-shifters) rages, that uniquely characterizes "My Lady Jane." Despite the cruelty against Ethians and Jane's efforts to prevent her impending marriage, a series of unforeseen events finds her sitting on the throne as the Queen of England.

My Lady Jane (2024) — Series Review

The series shines a light on the societal issues of prejudice and the importance of diverse perspectives for a leader. The female characters, including Jane, her intriguing mother, and her remarkable little sister, Lady Margaret, are the heart of the show. The villainous Princess Mary, who plots with her lover Lord Seymour to seize the throne, adds to the delightful drama.

"My Lady Jane," filled with memorable quotes, gripping plots, and a redefinition of the roles of women in this alternate Tudor era, stands out for its whimsical treatment of history. Despite strongly anchoring itself in fantasy, the series delivers a compelling narrative, charming and thrilling viewers with its eight-episode run that premieres on June 27.
