Música (2024) — Movie Review

"Música" is an intriguing romantic comedy that emphasizes the power of sound in our lives. The protagonist Rudy is a young man, played by the film’s writer and director Rudy Mancuso, who experiences the world through a symphony of everyday noises thanks to a condition called synesthesia.

For Rudy, common sounds of traffic or people talking form a cacophony that diverts his attention from his daily life. Rudy's synesthetic journey is brought to life by musical numbers utilizing everyday objects as instruments. His struggle to connect and meet others' expectations is illustrated through song and dance sequences, drawing a parallel with the off-Broadway show “Stomp” and adding an element of “All That Jazz”.

Rudy's life takes a turn when he counters societal expectations and begins a relationship with a fellow Brazilian American. As Rudy's love story unfolds, the film presents a vivid portrayal of Brazilian culture. Frequent transitions between English and Portuguese, the inclusion of traditional Brazilian foods and dance forms, and the consumption of 'cachaça' showcase the filmmaker's bond with his roots.

Rudy's mother Maria adds another interesting aspect to the narrative, emphasising the struggles faced by immigrants who try to hold onto their cultural bonds. Encountering ignorance and stereotypes from his girlfriend’s parents, Rudy must decide if he should correct their assumptions or keep quiet for peace.

"Música" offers more than a typical romantic comedy. It delves into exploring love and life with a disability, the joy in finding music in the mundane, our relationship with culture, and our ties to family. The film - as much a tribute to Mancuso's mother as it is to music and culture - is a noteworthy depiction of the Brazilian-American experience, adding a fresh perspective to the genre.
